Background of the Study

Environmental health education is essential for promoting sustainable waste management practices. Poor waste disposal contributes to environmental pollution, the spread of diseases, and poor sanitation (WHO, 2024). Educating communities about proper waste management helps in reducing environmental hazards and improving public health.

In Bauchi State, improper waste disposal remains a significant challenge, with many households and public spaces lacking structured waste management systems (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024). Environmental health education initiatives aim to address this issue by increasing awareness and encouraging proper waste disposal practices. This study examines the impact of environmental health education on waste management behaviors in Bauchi State.

Statement of the Problem

Despite existing environmental policies, waste mismanagement persists in Bauchi State due to low public awareness, inadequate waste disposal facilities, and poor enforcement of regulations (Adepoju & Salami, 2024). Many residents engage in open dumping and burning of waste, leading to environmental pollution and health risks.

This study evaluates how environmental health education influences waste management practices in Bauchi State and identifies factors affecting its effectiveness.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of environmental health education awareness among residents in Bauchi State.
  2. To evaluate the impact of environmental health education on waste disposal practices.
  3. To identify challenges affecting effective waste management education.

Research Questions

  1. How aware are residents of environmental health education in Bauchi State?
  2. What impact does environmental health education have on waste management practices?
  3. What challenges hinder the successful implementation of waste management education?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Environmental health education has no significant impact on residents’ waste management practices.
  2. There is no significant relationship between environmental health education and community sanitation levels.
  3. Implementation challenges do not significantly affect the effectiveness of waste management education programs.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on urban and rural areas of Bauchi State, assessing the effectiveness of environmental health education in improving waste management practices. Limitations include variations in literacy levels, access to waste disposal infrastructure, and enforcement of environmental policies.

Definitions of Terms

  • Environmental Health Education: Educational initiatives aimed at improving public awareness of environmental health risks and best practices.
  • Waste Management Practices: Methods used for waste collection, disposal, and recycling.
  • Sanitation: Measures taken to ensure cleanliness and prevent environmental contamination.
